Capt. John P. Menezes is a Principal Marine Consultant, Nautical Surveyor, Expert Witness and Maritime Arbitrator. He is CEO of Menezes and Associates, Mangalore. He has over 48 years of experience in the marine industry with over 33 years of full-time involvement in ship surveying, marine consultancy and ADR- related matters with 15 years of sea service culminating in theposition of Master. He is a Fellow of the Nautical Institute, a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, the first Fellow in India to the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors and a Fellow of the Company of Master Mariners of India.
EDUCATION
Capt. Menezes obtained his LLB from Mangalore University, and his LLM in Maritime Law from London Metropolitan University. He has provided consultancy services to premier investigation agencies and global government bodies, including the Government of India.
Marine Expertise
Capt. Menezes has handled Admiralty Claims including Collision, Salvage, Grounding, Fire, Pollution, Towage, CTL, Wreck Removal and other Casualties besides Sale and Purchase Inspections; Loss Prevention and Risk Management Surveys as per client requirement. He works as Flag State Safety Inspector and as Casualty Investigator for Flag Administrations. He has experience in offshore safety inspections of FPSO’s, MODU’s and tankers besides Safety Inspections of Passenger Vessels. Associate Surveyor to International Cargo Gear Bureau Inc. NY.
Various Designations
Presently he is a Director of Mission to Seafarers Association of India, Mumbai and also serves as Hon. Secretary of Institute of Chartered Ship Brokers (ICS) East India Branch, Chennai.
Capt. Menezes was earlier an Independent Director of Seven Islands Shipping Ltd. (SISL), Mumbai and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL), a Trustee of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and Director of Mangalore Special Economic Zone (MSEZ).
Arbitration Associations
Capt. Menezes has been an Expert Witness for maritime cases since 1992, and a practising Maritime Arbitrator and Mediator since 2013. He has presented various papers on Alternate Dispute Resolution at the International Conference of Maritime Arbitrators ICMA-2009 in Hamburg, at the ICMA-2015 in Hong Kong and the ICMA-2017 in Copenhagen. He is a Supporting Member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, a Fellow of the Indian Council of Arbitration (ICA), and a Member of London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) – Asia Pacific Users Council. Empanelled as Arbitrator with Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration (SCMA), Mauritius International Arbitration Centre (MIAC), Emirates Maritime Arbitration Centre (EMAC) Dubai, Asia International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Malaysia and China Maritime Arbitration Commission (CMAC), Beijing.
MARITIME AND LEGAL EXPERTISE
Capt. Menezes is a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators Association, a Fellow of the Indian Council of Arbitration, and a Member of the London Court of International Arbitration – Asia Pacific Users Council. He has been empanelled as an arbitrator with the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration, Mauritius International Arbitration Centre, Asia International Arbitration Centre, Kuala Lumpur and China Maritime Arbitration Commission, Beijing. He is also empanelled
as an Arbitrator for the dispute redressal mechanism with, “The Society for Affordable Redressal of Disputes – Ports” (“SAROD – PORTS”). He has presented various papers on alternate dispute resolution at the International Conference of Maritime Arbitrators (2009) in Hamburg, at the ICMA (2015) in Hong Kong and at the ICMA (2017) in Copenhagen.
ACHIEVEMENTS
After obtaining a Humanities degree from Osmania University, he obtained an LLB from Man galore University and his LLM in Maritime Law from London Metropolitan University. He has provided consultancy services to premier Investigation agencies and global government bodies, including the Government of India. He has handled various Admiralty claims and also works as Flag State Safety Inspector, ISM, ISPS and MLC Auditor and as Casualty Investigator for various flag state administrations. He is the Vice Chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers East India Branch, Chennai, headquartered in London. Currently, he is the Treasurer and Director of the Mission Seafarers Association, India with its Head Office in Mumbai and was instrumental in setting
up the Nautical Institute India SW Branch, Kochi in 2015, where he served as Chairman from 2017 to 2019 and Hon. Secretary from 2021 to date. He was a member of the Nautical Institute Executive Council from 2008 to 2015 and Director/Trustee, Executive Board of NI Headquarters between 2016 and 2022. Capt. Menezes has also served as an Independent Director on the board of Seven Islands Shipping Ltd., Mumbai, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd., a Trustee of New Mangalore Port Trust, President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Director of Mangalore Special Economic Zone.

- He is a visiting Faculty at Mangalore University for Maritime Studies and Maritime Security.
